2nd Annual Juneau Maritime Festival is this Saturday
Published: 05/12/2011 13:20:00
This coming Saturday heralds a unique event taking place at Marine Park; the Juneau Maritime Festival. We spoke with the Stuart Gerger, the event coordinator, to find out more.

"Well the Maritime Festival began last year, with its first year in 2010 as an idea to celebrate Juneau's maritime culture, commerce and history. The idea came from the offices of the Juneau Economic Development Council but it's really a group effort by local maritime related businesses and agencies.
Well there's going to be all kinds of great events, obviously there's going to be things for kids, there's a fish casting contest, a dry land casting contest that Kids Hooked on Fishing is sponsoring, DIPAC is going to bring their touch tanks, Discovery Southeast is going to do some outside maritime education and other things.
The Native Community Welcoming Ceremony is at noon and at one o'clock the Coast Guard helicopter from Sitka will be arriving and doing a SARS, a sea and air rescue demonstration.
Later in the day the One People Native Canoe Society will do a racing exhibition from here.
There will be a Coast Guard patrol boat, landing craft, a gillnetter, the native canoes, a charter yacht; all these boats are open for the community to come aboard, to learn about the different kinds of working vessels in these waters."

And for those of you who like to cook what you catch, there's a special contest happening. Stuart explained about that as well.

"And we are calling all folks who think that they can really do, or they really have done, a great salmon marinade to put it together, come on down at 11 and drop that marinade off on Saturday and then the marinade contest, celebrity judges will be putting those marinades on fish or will have soaked them in those marinades and we'll be having a judging contest at 1:15."

If that sounds yummy to you too, the festival runs from 11 to 5 this Saturday at Marine Park
